"Rube" McCray (1904-1972) was head coach of the basketball team
(1943-1945) and the football team (1944-1950) at the College of
William & Mary. As head coach of the football team he had a record of
45-22-3 and took the team to a loss in the 1947 Dixie Bowl and a
win in the 1948 Delta Bowl. Under his watch the College of
William & Mary was exposed for altering high school transcripts and giving
phony grades to student athletes in order to recruit better athletes and
raise the standard of the school's athletic program tocompete at a
winning level. The players involved in the scandal reportedly had no knowledge
of any transcript altering and McCray said that he never altered any
transcripts himself. However, he resigned shortly after the news
of the scandal became known nationwide. Creased (barely visible head on).
