yours." Stephen Samuel Wise (born in Budapest, Hungary, 1874-1949)
was an American Reform rabbi and Zionist leader, founder of the Free
Synagogue, in New York City. Established on his principal to "question
whether the pulpit shall be free or whether the pulpit shall not be free, and,
by reason of its loss of freedom, reft of its power for good", the Free
Synagogue opened its doors in 1907, officially marking the age of the "free
Synagogue" movement. An early supporter of Zionism, Wise committed his social
causes to Political Zionism, founding the New York Federation of Zionist
Societies in 1897 and serving as a delegate and secretary at the Second Zionist
Congress in 1898. His other important public and charitable positions include
the first vice-president of the Oregon State Conference of Charities and
Correction, Commissioner of Child Labor for the State of Oregon, founder of the
Peoples' Forum of Oregon, co-founder of NAACP, founder of the Jewish
Institute of Religion (now part of the Hebrew Union College), and position
secretary of the Federation of American Zionists (FAZ). Along with other
gracious and dedicated world leaders, Wise was also a close personal friend
of President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Normal mailing folds.
