RACHEL CROTHERS. Signature: "Yours very truly/Rachel Crothers", 4x1¼. Playwright and sometimes actress Rachel Crothers (1878-1958) averaged one Broadway play a year from 1906 (The Three of Us) to 1940 (The Old Foolishness), an even more remarkable feat as she usually cast, produced and directed most of her plays.Known for her social comedies that focused on the ethical problems faced by women, the playwright is best known for Susan and God (1937), but her other well known works include A Man's World (1909), He and She (1911), Old Lady 31 (1916) and Let Us Be Gay (1929). In 1940, Crothers was one of the organizers of the American Theater Wing, which operated the Stage Door Canteen. Crothers, who served as the organization's Executive Director until 1950, had also been a founding member of the Stage Women's War Relief Board during WWI. Lightly creased, light vertical fold at the "ch" of Rachel. Slightly soiled, touching writing (all completely legible). Overall, fine condition.
