Autograph Letter Signed: "Rafael de Castro" in iron gall ink. 10x8. Fully Translated in English: " Sir. Jose Maria Rodriguez, My very good and respectable friend: I regret that the multiple and very urgent occupations that I have now keep me from the pleasure to go say hi to you and from conversing with everybody about current issues. But I get comforted by the hope of being able to do it soon and have, among other satisfactions, the one of verbally amplify the reasons in which my letter addressed to you and Alejandro dated on July 3 was -not very well interpreted- and I will explain to you and your army fellows that honor me with their considerations, until what point should I consider inexcusable the obligation to correspond all the exquisite kindness in your last letter, which author deserves all my respect and highest recognition. I long for that moment because I don't want you or any other compatriot to even think that the retirement I aspire to will forbid my country from the modest help that a honorable Cuban would give it in every occasion, even in those when he could had felt, for a hundred motives, discharged from every task, he know how to be consequent in his emissions, without forgetting what the conscience perceives to gentlemen and without disobeying what the heart orders the Cubans. I aspire to an absolute license: I want to take the position that corresponds to the rolled by the events: I am from the defeated ones; in your canniness can't result that my aspiration is logical, natural and reasonable. From my withdrawal the new political life of my country will have all the help that men owe to their fatherland; and it would be and will be, without a doubt, as much as it seems more respectable for the strength that the concrete, reasonable and precedent attitudes give. So, I am sure to have, in order to act that way, with the approval of all those who seriously meditated about their value and represent the political consequence, the honesty of the commissions and the indissolubility of the ties that link the men, with their reason and feelings. I will like to personally offer you the testimony of my most distinguished consideration, at your service, Rafael de Castro."
