RAGS RAGLAND and RICHARD QUINE
Signatures in pencil on opposite sides of an album leaf
Autograph Sentiment signed in pencil: "Thanks/Rags Ragland", and signed on verso: "Richard Quine", 5¾x4¼ album leaf. John "Rags" RAGLAND (1905-1946) was an improvisational burlesque comedian. He took his Broadway role in Panama Hattie to the movie screen (1942), and played Red Skelton's sidekick in several films, beginning with Whistling in the Dark (1941). Frank Sinatra was at his bedside when he died and sang at his funeral. After playing supporting roles in many films of the 1930s and 1940s, RICHARD QUINE (1920-1989) turned to directing and producing. His successful directing efforts include Bell, Book and Candle (1958) and The World of Suzie Wong (1960). His productions include Paris When it Sizzles (1964) and How to Murder Your Wife (1945). His life included a large element of tragedy. Married to Oscar-nominated actress Susan Peters, he was on the hunting trip on which she accidentally discharged a firearm, causing her permanent paralysis. With his career on the decline, Quine himself committed suicide. Lightly spotted. Binding holes at left edge. Pencil captions (unknown hand) at lower margin. Otherwise, fine condition.
