RALPH BAKSHI. Original Art, unsigned. B/w, 5x8. Pencil drawing and
study of a cartoon character; doodles at upper margin. Animator and filmmaker
Ralph Bakshi began his career at the age of 18 as a cell painter for Terrytoons
Animation Studio. He quickly became an animator, working on such characters as
Mighty Mouse, Heckle and Jeckle and Deputy Dog. After becoming a Creative
Director for CBS, Bakshi created and wrote The Mighty Heroes before
moving to Paramount Cartoon Studios, where he did four animated theatricals:
Marvin Digs, Mini Squirts, Super Basher and Bop and The
Fiendish Five. In 1971, he created, wrote and directed his controversial
Fritz the Cat, an animated feature that was touted as "the first X-rated
animated cartoon". Bakshi followed it with even more controversial animated
features: Heavy Traffic (1973) and Coonskin (1975). In 1977, he
turned to the safer realm of science fiction, creating, writing, directing and
producing Wizards and later directing an animated version of Lord of
the Rings (1978), using a rotoscoping technique to animate realistic
characters. The multi-talented Bakshi has also created and directed live action
shorts and TV movies and directed The Harlem Shuffle, a Rolling Stones
music video. Paper clip impression at upper mid-left doodles. Cofee stain at
lower middle affecting right foot and seat of cartoon character. Otherwise, fine
condition.
