Autograph note signed: "To Maebelle/Sincerely/Ralph Graves",
in pencil, 6x4½. Ralph Graves (1900-1977) was an American
screenwriter, director, and actor, working primarily in the 1920's and
1930's. One of his first ventures into writing and directing was with his film
Swell Hogan (1926), which became the first film to be produced
by a young Howard Hughes, who allegedly engaged in a homosexual
relationship with Graves during production. Noted as being one of the
worst films in production, Hughes eventually ordered the film to be
destroyed despite it's $80,000 budget, seeing that it was never shown
outside of production screenings. Graves eventually moved past the destroyed
film, going on to direct four other films the following year, though the
majority of his success came from his acting. He retired from film in 1949,
with his last role being in the film Joe Palooka in the
Counterpunch. Binding holes on left margin. Slight surface creases.
Slightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
