RALPH TERRY
Signed baseball card for 1962, which would prove to be his best season
Sports Card signed: "Good luck/Ralph Terry". Color, 2½x3½. Topps baseball card #48 for 1962. Pitching stats for 1961 and career printed on verso. Right-handed pitcher Ralph Terry (1936-2022) pitched for the New York Yankees (1956-1957, 1959-1964), Kansas City A's (1957-1959, 1966), Cleveland Indians (1965), and New York Mets (1966-1967). He could have been remembered only as the man who gave up Pittsburgh Pirates second baseman Bill Mazeroski's legendary walk-off, World Series-winning home run, but he redeemed himself with strong seasons in 1961 and 1962, helping the team win the World Series. He reached a number of career bests in 1962, capped by an outstanding World Series. That year, Terry went 23-12 with a 3.19 ERA and led the AL in wins. He lost Game Two of the World Series 2-0 as the Yankees managed only three hits, but finally earned his first World Series win in Game Five, a complete-game 5-3 victory. A three-day rain delay before Game Six allowed him to come back for Game Seven. Pitching a superb four-hit shutout against the San Francisco Giants, with the tying and winning runs on base, he won 1-0 after getting Willie McCovey to line right at second baseman Bobby Richardson with two out and two on. After Terry retired from baseball, he became a semi-professional golfer who could be seen on the Senior (now Champions) Tour beginning in 1986. Corners lightly creased. Otherwise, fine condition.
