RALPH W. YARBOROUGH
The U.S. Senator from Texas signs a First Day Cover for the Apollo 8 Mission
First Day Cover signed: "Ralph W. Yarborough/U.S.S. Texas", 6½x3¾. FDC for the Apollo 8 Mission, postmarked Houston, Texas, 1969 May 5, 6-cent U.S. stamp affixed, FIRST DAY OF ISSUE. Ralph W. Yarborough (1903-1996) was born in Chandler, Texas. A graduate of the University of Texas Law School, he served as assistant attorney general of Texas (1931-1934) and as district judge of the Fifty-third Judicial district, Austin, Texas (1936-1941). He served in Europe and Japan during World War II and after returning home became a member of the Texas Board of Law Examiners (1947-1951). Yarborough was elected to the U.S. Senate as a Democrat from Texas and served from April 29, 1957 to January 3, 1971. While senator, on November 22, 1963, he was riding in a convertible with Vice President Lyndon B. Johnson when President John F. Kennedy was shot and killed in Dallas, Texas. A major reason for JFK's visit to Texas was to try to mediate the quarrel between Senator Yarborough and Governor John Connally, who was riding with the President. Lightly creased. Lightly toned. Otherwise, fine condition.
