The Nepalese Gurkha who fought in the Indonesian Confrontation signs his name in
black ink
Signature: “Ram bahadur Limbu” in black ink, 4½x3½. Rambahadur Limbu (b. 1939) is a
former Nepalese Gurkha who fought in the Indonesian Confrontation. He received the
Victoria Cross for his service in as a Lance-Corporal in the 2nd Battalion, 10th Princess
Mary's Own Gurkha Rifles regiment of the British Indian Army. During the Indonesian
Confrontation, Limbu was a member of an advance party that encountered a group of
approximately 30 Indonesians. He and two other men broke off from the group of 16 and
proceeded to stealthily approach the group of 30, which was camped on top of a hill. When
they were only about 10 yards away, they were spotted and the Indonesians opened fire on
them. After Limbu killed an Indonesian machine gunner with a grenade, he helped his
two injured comrades to safety. Limbu then used a Bren gun to fight back against the
Indonesians, killing many in the process. In recognition of his bravery during this
incident, he was awarded the Victoria Cross. Limbu retired from the military with the
honorary rank of captain. Sparse staining concentrated at center, not affecting signature.
Toned. Paper clip indentation extending in from right edge. Ink and pencil notes in an
unknown hand on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
