RAMON NOVARRO. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To George M. Smith/with my very best wishes/Ramon Novarro". B/w, 7½x9½. Two unrelated newspaper articles relating to Marian Anderson affixed to verso, which has Novarro's name written (unknown hand) in pencil. Mexican-born actor Ramon Novarro (1899-1968) was a big star of silent films in the 1920s who made a successful transition into talkies in the next decade. Billed as "the next Valentino", he played the title role in Ben Hur (1925). Novarro made occasional film and TV appearances until he was brutally murdered. Although billed as a "Latin lover", Novarro was, in fact, a homosexual, and his killing was deemed a hate crime. Surface creased, touching facial image. Minor show through from mounting. Two file nicks at right edge. Overall, fair condition.
