RAMÓN NOVARRO. Typed Letter signed: "Ramón Novarro", 1 p, 8x10¾. On letterhead of Niels Larsen Productions. Madrid, Spain, 1956 December 28. To James Starr, Los Angeles Herald Express, Los Angeles, California. In full: "Happy New Year to you! After a long search for a producer for my picture in London and Paris, and almost having given up finding him, I came to Madrid, where he was waiting for me. Niels West-Larsen is the name. He is just whom I was looking for, and he offered me exactly what I had in mind. We have already signed contracts to do 'JUST PASSING BY' in May, here in Madrid; but I'll be flying back home and hope to be there by the middle of January. Looking forward to the plesure of seeing you again and telling you'de vive voix' how happy I am. God bless you. Your friend." Mexican-born Novarro (1899-1968) was a big star of silent films in the 1920s who made a successful transition into talkies in the next decade. He made occasional film and TV appearances until his brutal murder. Billed as "the next Valentino", Novarro played the title role in Ben Hur (1925). Novarro's hope expressed in this letter proved unfounded. His intended film "Just Passing By" was never released. Binder holes at left edge. Fine condition.
