RAMSHACKLE INN PLAY CAST
Vintage program signed by the star of the 1944 Broadway production, two of her cast mates and two other Broadway performers.
Program signed: "Zasu Pitts" on the cover, "good luck/Bruce/Hall", "Best wishes/John Connor", "Cordially/Cora Witherspoon" on page 9, and "Harlan Briggs" on page 10. 12 pages, 8½x11. Program for a Robert Reud production of Ramshackle Inn, starring Zasu Pitts, which ran at the Royal Theatre on Broadway from January 5, 1944 to July 8, 1944. In the play ZaSu played Belinda Pryde, Briggs played Constable Small and Witherspoon played Mame Phillips. The program bears ZaSu's and other actor's facsimile signatures, which are printed on several pages. Her calculated vagueness, nervous speech pattern and fluttery hand gestures (used by producers of the animated Popeye cartoons for the Olive Oyl character) and catch phrase, "Oh, dear, oh my", established ZASU PITTS (1898-1963) as a top character comedian in the 1930s. Also a superb dramatic actress, she had played the lead in Erich von Stroheim's ten-hour masterpiece, Greed (1924). ZaSu (named for her Aunts Eliza and Susan) was known to television audiences as Elvira "Nugey" Nugent on The Gale Storm Show (Oh! Susannah) from 1956-1960. HARLAN BRIGGS (1879-1952) was a vaudeville and stage actor who appeared for three years on Broadway in the stage version of Sinclair Lewis' Dodsworth (1936). After playing the same role in the film, he became a familiar character actor, usually playing small town big-wigs. His most memorable role was probably that of Doctor Stall in W. C. Fields' The Bank Dick (1940). Briggs made one TV appearance in an episode of The Lone Ranger (1950). Louisiana born actress CORA WITHERSPOON (1890-1957) began her career on stage in New York where at the age of 20 she played and elderly lady in The Concert (1910). Usually playing "older" characters, some of her other Broadway successes were Daddy Long Legs, Lilies of the Field and The Awful Truth. In the 1930s she began to also appear in film but kept her base in New York - choosing to go back and forth to Hollywood. A few of her highly noted films are: Libeled Lady (1936), Personal Property (1937), Madam X (1937), Dark Victory (1939) and The Bank Dick (1940) with W.C. Fields as his henpecking wife - perhaps her most memorable role. Witherspoon made a few television appearances in the early 1950s: "Fireside Theatre", "Kraft Television Theatre" and "Studio One". BRUCE HALL appeared in five Broadway productions from 1946 to 1952, including Joan of Lorraine (1946-1947), Southern Exposure (1950) and Barefoot in Athens (1951). JOHN CONNOR appeared in one Broadway production, the 1946 play Maid in the Ozarks at the Belasco Theatre. Slightly worn. Otherwise, fine condition.
