RANDY NEWMAN. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Peggy/Love,/Randy Newman". B/w, 8x10 overall, image 8¾x6½ (one surface). In the late 1960s and the 1970s, Newman was a critically acclaimed songwriter and performer whose often biting satire only occasionally reached a mass audience, though he did score #1 adult hits with "Short People" (1978) and "It's Money That Matters" (1988).Beginning with Ragtime (1981), however, Newman began a hugely successful run with songs and scores for films. He earned three Grammys and 21 Oscar nominations in the next twenty years, although he didn't claim his first (and second) Oscar until 2001 (for Monsters, Inc.). His other Oscar nominations to date came for The Natural, Parenthood, Avalon, Toy Story 1 & 2, James and the Giant Peach, Pleasantville, A Bug's Life, Babe: Pigs in the City and Meet the Parents.
