RANDY NEWMAN
Shown on stage during an outdoor performance in this 6x4 black and white photograph
Photograph signed: "Randy/Newman". B/w, 6x4. An acclaimed songwriter and performer, Randy Newman (b. 1943) only occasionally reached a mass audience with his biting satire in his early years, though he did score #1 adult hits with "Short People" (1978) and "It's Money That Matters" (1988). Other examples of his mordant lyrics included "Drop the Big One", about nuclear weapons, and "Burn On, Big River", about the Cuyahoga catching fire. Beginning with Ragtime (1981), however, Newman began a hugely successful run with songs and scores for films. He earned three Grammys and 21 Oscar nominations in the next twenty years, although he didn't claim his first (and second) Oscar until 2001 (for Monsters, Inc.). His other Oscar nominations to date came for The Natural, Parenthood, Avalon, Toy Story 1 & 2, James and the Giant Peach, Pleasantville, A Bug's Life, Babe: Pigs in the City and Meet the Parents.
