Inscribed Book Signed: "For Leonard Lyons/cordially/Jos Foster/Oct 22 1968" on inside cover and "for my old friend Leonard Lyons New York" in pencil on first blank flyleaf at the perimeter of an original full page pencil drawing of a nude woman carrying a tray, which Soyer has titled "Topless and Bottomless Waitress" at the left margin. He has signed "by/Raphael Soyer" on the drawing and dated "19/68", 124p, 8½x11¼, hardcover. Raphael Soyer: Drawings and Watercolors by Joseph K. Foster, Crown Publishers, Inc., New York: 1968. First Edition. RAPHAEL SOYER (1899-1987), the twin brother of artist Moses Soyer, had his first exhibition in America in 1926, fourteen years after coming to the U.S. from their native Russia. A social realist, Soyer is best known for his paintings of ordinary men and women during the Great Depression. His style and expertise in the genre gained him the title "The Dean of American Realism". The works of JOSEPH K. FOSTER also include The Posters of Picasso. LEONARD LYONS, to whom this book was inscribed, was a syndicated columnist for the "New York Post". In original dust jacket, which is scuffed and soiled. 2¼x1¼-inch paper loss at "Raph" of title. Signature page slightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
