Governor Blanton sends gracious letter to collector
Typed Letter signed: "Ray Blanton" as Governor, 1p,
7¼x10½. Nashville, Tennessee, 1975 December 30. On official letterhead to
Danny Franklin, Phoenix, Arizona. In full: "In response to your recent
request, I am happy to send you a photograph. [not included] I am glad to
be included in your collection. I appreciate your encouragement and support. I
hope that you will visit the State of Tennessee soon. Please be assured of my
willingness and desire to serve you. Sincerely." Leonard Ray Blanton
(1930-1996), a Democrat, was a US Representative from Tennessee (1967-1973)
and Governor of that State (1975-1979). He was accused of using his office
to sell pardons and went to federal prison for selling liquor licenses, but
questions were later raised about the propriety of the charges and Blanton
always maintained his innocence. After serving his sentence, Blanton ran for
Congress in 1988, receiving a mere 7% of the vote. Light paperclip stain at top
center. Otherwise, fine condition.
