RAY McDONALD
Youthful image in a sweater, inscribed in person to collector Saul Goodman. Extremely rare!
Photograph inscribed and signed: "Saul/Good Luck/Your Friend/Ray McDonald". B/w, 8x10. Collector's ink note on verso dates signature: 10-14-1943. Ray McDonald (1920-1959) forming a tap dance team with sister Grace McDonald, was a hit in the Broadway musical Babe in Arms at age 16. His early films showed great promise, including his contribution to the Mickey Rooney/Judy Garland Babes on Broadway (1941). Wartime service stalled his career. His last feature film was All Ashore (with Rooney and Dick Haymes, 1943), described by one critic as "a poor man's On the Town. Appearances on TV variety shows, including Ed Sullivan, seemed to promise a fresh start, but he choked to death on food in a New York hotel room at age 37. Saul Goodman (1919-2003), a New York business man by day, pursued his love of film and theatre in the evening, making friends with many celebrities. While other autograph seekers offered album leaves, Goodman presented stars with snazzy photographs, a rarity then, to sign in fountain pen. Corners worn and creased. Multiple ink stamps and typing on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
