RAY McKINLEY
Black and white with brown hue publicity photograph of Ray McKinley
playing the drums.
Photograph inscribed and signed: "To 'Stick'/Gratefully/Ray
McKinley". B/w with brown hue, 8x10 overall, image 7½x8¾ (one surface).
Captioned at lower margin: "Ray McKinley/Featured with/Jimmy Dorsey and
his Orchestra". Drummer, bandleader and singer Ray McKinley (1910-1995) was a
driving force behind both Jimmy Dorsey's big band (1935-1939) and
Glenn Miller's American Band of the Allied Expeditionary Forces (during
WWII). McKinley, who recorded with Dorsey, Miller and Benny Goodman, among
others, was co-leader of a band with trombonist Will Bradley (1939-1942)
and headed several of his own groups, including "Swing Shift", culled from
Miller's musicians during WWII. In 1956, McKinley was commissioned by
Miller's widow to reincarnate a Glenn Miller Orchestra. The group had a
successful tour to Iron Curtain countries in 1957 and continued to tour the U.S.
until 1966. McKinley later joined yet another Glenn Miller Orchestra (fronted by
Buddy De Franco) in 1972. Creased at blank corners. ¼-inch tear at right blank
margin. Slightly soiled at lower blank margin. Fine condition.
