Signature: "Raymond Mortimer/22 October 1952", 4¼x2. English
author Raymond Mortimer (1895-1980) served in the hospital corps in
France during World War I, remaining in Paris to become a writer. Although
he wrote some fiction, Mortimer is best remembered as the literary editor of
the New Statesman and literary critic for the Sunday Times.
The bisexual Mortimer had affairs with actress Valerie Taylor, and with diplomat
and parliamentarian Harold Nicolson. He was a close friend of Nicolson's wife,
poet Vita Sackville-West. Mortimer was honored with a CBE in 1955.
