The Apollo 14 crew inscribes this 20x16 launch photograph to NASA official
Inscribed Photograph signed: "To Stan and Pat Jacobsen/ and Family/ Our best regards/ The
Apollo 14 Crew/ Al Shepard/ 3-22-71" ,"Stu O. Roosa" and "Ed Mitchell" in various inks,
color, 20x16 overall, image 13¼x10¼ (two surfaces). The launch of Apollo 14 took place on
January 31, 1971, nine months after the near tragedy of Apollo 13. ALAN SHEPARD
(1923-1998), the first American to go into space 10 years earlier, had just returned to
flight eligibility after being grounded by an ear disorder that was corrected by surgery. As an
old pro, he was the ideal choice to command this lunar landing mission. While STUART A.
ROOSA (1933-1994) remained in lunar orbit, Shepard and EDGAR D. MITCHELL
(1930-2016) touched down on the Moon on February 5, 1971. At one point, Shepard took
two golf balls that he had smuggled in his spacesuit and used an implement from the tool cart
to execute what he called a "sand-trap shot," the only golf shot ever made on the Moon. As the
first U.S. astronaut, he knew he could get away with it without repercussions and he did.
STAN JACOBSEN was Assistant Chief of the Publications Branch at NASA's Manned
Spacecraft Center in Houston. With input from the astronauts themselves, his staff designed
the space mission insignias. Shepard is the only Mercury astronaut to walk on the Moon.
Photograph has faded a bit due to exposure to sunlight. Creased at lower right-hand corner of
mat. Otherwise, fine condition.
