Autograph Letter Signed: "Cha H. Bell" in iron gall ink. 5x8. One page. Written on Commandant's Office letterhead. In Full: "A mistake has been made in the value of the Estrella - she cannot be sold for less than $8,200 dollars. Her estimated value was $11,000 - I was authorized to sell her at 25 per cent less - this is $8,250 -". Charles H. Bell (1798-1875) entered the United States Navy as midshipman, June 12, 1812, two months before his 14th birthday and served with Commodore Decatur in 1813. In the war with Algiers he was again with Decatur on board the Macedonian. He later served in the West Indies and commanded the sloop Yorktown, on the coast of Africa, capturing three slavers, one of them with 903 slaves on board. During the Civil War he was in command of the Pacific Squadron (1861-1864). He was in command of the Brooklyn Navy Yard (1865-1868), commissioned Rear Admiral in 1866. Lightly toned and soiled. Tape residue throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
