Manuscript Letter Signed: "Chas H. Bell" in iron gall ink as Commandant. 1 page. 8x9¾. Commandant's Office, Navy Yard, New York, July 25, 1865. To Lieut. Commander John G. Walker, Commd U.S.S. "Shawmut". In full: "How long has Richard N. Prichart to serve, is he in debt; and what is his general conduct?" Charles H. Bell (1798-1875) entered the United States Navy as midshipman, June 12, 1812, two months before his 14th birthday and served with Commodore Decatur in 1813. In the war with Algiers he was again with Decatur on board the Macedonian. He later served in the West Indies and commanded the sloop Yorktown, on the coast of Africa, capturing three slavers, one of them with 903 slaves on board. During the Civil War he was in command of the Pacific Squadron (1861-1864). He was in command of the Brooklyn Navy Yard (1865-1868), commissioned Rear Admiral in 1866. Fine condition.
