GEORGE DUFEK
The explorer who helmed Operation Deep Freeze signs this postcard
Autograph Note Signed: "To:/ Frank Milton Clements/ With personal/ regards from his friend/
Rear Admiral George Dufek/ U.S. Navy". 5x3. Postmarked Washington D.C., January 20,
1960. Rear Admiral George J. Dufek (1903-1977) effectively commanded Operation
Deep Freeze, a series of Antarctic projects conducted in 1956 under the nominal command of
veteran explorer Admiral Richard Bird. Operation Deep Freeze built a U.S. airbase at
McMurdo Sound. Dufek flew with the crew of a transport aircraft to the South Pole,
becoming the first man to set foot there since Richard Scott's ill-fated expedition of 1912.
The flight was a reconnaissance mission to determine the feasibility of putting landing facilities
at the Pole itself, but Dufek made the call that conditions there were too extreme. Lightly
toned. Corners and edges gently worn. Several indentations with light wear along the bottom
edge. Scuffing throughout. Otherwise, fine condition.
