Autograph Letter Signed: "G.F. Pearson" in iron gall ink. 6½x8. Place: Portsmouth, New Hampshire. Date: July 5, 1845. In full: "I take pleasure in being able to state that Mr. WM. Laughton served in the [illegible] makers gang [illegible] in 1839, when I was attached to this station and that he was an interesting and excellent man. I believe him to be in every way qualified for the actuation of commander in the Navy. Truly yours, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. G.F. Pearson.Commander." George F. Pearson (1799-1867) was born in Portsmouth, New Hampshire but lived most of his life in Massachusetts. He entered the U.S. Navy on March 11, 1815 as a midshipman, and his first ship was the frigate Unites States. Eventually, he was given the title of Rear-Admiral of the United States Navy, commanding the Pacific Squadron during the last part of the American Civil War. Pearson also participated in the Second Seminole War and the Mexican-American War. He died on July 1, 1867 in the same city where he had been born. Fragile . Toned and soiled. Multiple mailing folds. Two pages. Pencil notations on verso (unknown hand). Edges slightly frayed. Otherwise, fine condition.
