Handwritten, signed letter from the Rear Admiral as Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering saying he had received a forwarded report and that he wishes the recipient and his mother well. Extremely rare!
Autograph letter signed: "Geo. W. Melville/U.S.N.", 1p, 5x8. Washington, D.C., 1888 July 25. On letterhead of the Navy Department, Bureau of Steam Engineering to Mr. Bantten Esqr. In full: "I have the honor to acknowledge the receipt of a copy of the report of the Humane Society of Boston, forwarded me by your kindness. Hoping you and your mother are well and happy I am sir Respectfully". George W. Melville (1841-1912), who had begun his Naval career during the American Civil War, was Chief Engineer of the Jeannette, George W. DeLong's ship in his 1879 Arctic exploration. After the wreck of the ship, Melville led a detachment to safety through Siberia and headed a relief expedition that recovered the bodies of DeLong and his companions. Melville was Chief Engineer on the Thetis of Greely's relief expedition and served as Chief of the Bureau of Steam Engineering, U.S. Navy, from 1887-1903, when he retired from the Navy as a Rear Admiral. Stained at lower right margin, touching the "lle" of Melville. Lightly soiled. Normal mailing folds. Light surface creases. Corners lightly worn, with heavy crease to bottom left. Pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso. Paper fragment on top left corner. Otherwise, fine condition.
