REAR ADMIRAL HENRY HAYWOOD BELL - AUTOGRAPH LETTER SIGNED 08/16/1866 - HFSID 315950

REAR ADMIRAL HENRY H. BELL
As Commander of the US East India Squadron, he issues orders to the commander of the flagship Hartford to read a General Order to all officers and crew.
Autograph Letter signed: "H H Bell/Acting Rear Admiral/Commanding U. S. East India Squadron", 1 page, 8¼x10. Yokohama, Japan, 1866 August 16. To US Flag Ship Hartford, in full: "Upon the receipt of this General Order, the Commanding Officer will cause it to be read to the Officers and Crew of his vessel at General Muster." Henry Hayood Bell (1808-1868) entered the US Navy as a midshipman in 1823, sailing the Caribbean, Atlantic and Mediterranean aboard such famous vessels as the Constitution and United States. A Fleet Captain during the Civil War, he commanded the West Gulf Blockade Squadron and participated in the capture of New Orleans. In late 1865, by now a brevet Rear Admiral, he was named commander of the East India Squadron, which would be renamed the Asiatic Squadron during his command. In 1867, he led the unsuccessful punitive expedition against Formosan (Taiwanese) pirates. (Continued piracy from that island would lead to Japan's invasion and occupation in 1871.) Bell drowned when his boat capsized in heavy seas as he was coming ashore at Hiroga, Japan. Heavily toned. Stain on right margin. Tear on right and left margins. Normal mailing folds. Surface creases. Corners lightly worn and creased. Otherwise, fine condiiton.
