HIRAM PAULDING
During the Civil War, the Rear Admiral orders an ensign to report to the U.S.
Steamer Mackinaw.

Ensign Walter Rankin, U.S. Navy, New York. In full: "Report to Acting
Master Robertson for temporary duty on board the U.S. Steamer Mackinaw".
Penned at top: "Reported Augt 17th/John D. Robertson/Acting Master". In
the War of 1812, Paulding performed gallantly as acting lieutenant of the
Ticonderoga at the Battle of Lake Champlain (Plattsburg), September 11,
1814. In 1824, the 27-year-old lieutenant, on duty in the Pacific aboard the
United States, volunteered to carry dispatches from the Peruvian port of Callao
to Simon Bolivar's headquarters deep in the Andes, a 1500-mile trek through the
mountains on horseback. He cruised the Mediterranean in the 1830s and, in 1844,
took the Vincennes on a three-year cruise to China. In 1861, Paulding
took command of the U.S. Navy Yard in New York City. Although technically
retired in December because he was 64, he was kept on special duty and was
promoted to Rear Admiral in July 1862. At the time of his death on October 20,
1878, he was the senior officer on the naval list and the last surviving officer
of the Battle of Lake Champlain. Lightly creased and soiled. Overall, fine
condition.
