Typed Letter signed: "L. T. DuBose" as Rear Admiral, 1p, 5½x8½. US Naval Base Charleston, Charleston, South Carolina, 1947 December 2. On official letterhead as Commandant of the Sixth Naval District to Ashley T. Cole, New York, N. Y. In full: "I will be pleased to autograph the official photograph which you now have if you will send it to me. [Item not included.] As I am not quite sure of the type of inscription you might desire, I would be pleased to have any suggestion that you may have. Sincerely". Chief of the US Navy's Bureau of Construction and Repair prior to World War II, Admiral Lawrence DuBose (1893-1967) became a highly decorated cruiser commander in the Pacific Theater of World War II. As commander of the heavy cruiser USS Portland, he earned a Navy Cross for his role in the Battle of Santa Cruz (October, 1942), and two Gold Stars in lieu of additional navy crosses with the Portland the Battle of Savo Island and as commander of Task Force 30 in fighting of Formosa (October 1944). DuBose's cruisers were also heavily engaged in the raid on Truk and in the Battle of Leyte Gulf. Horizontal mailing fold. Lightly soiled. Otherwise, fine condition.
