RICHARD E. BYRD
Signed in 1928 before his first Antarctic expedition.
Printed Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Mickie Millar/with cordial good wish/R E Byrd/May 17, 1928". B/w, 5½x8½ overall, image 4x5¼ (one surface). Wide World Photo captioned: "Commander Richard Evelyn Byrd, U.S. Navy (ret.)". Byrd was in charge of the aviation unit of the Navy-MacMillan Polar Expedition (1925), flew over the North Pole with Floyd Bennett (1926), made a 42-hour transatlantic flight with three others (1927) and made expeditions to Antarctica (1928-1930, 1933-1935). Byrd left on his first expedition to Antarctica in the fall of 1928. There, he set up a base, which he christened "Little America". It was from this point that Byrd and Bernt Balchen, the man whom Byrd chose as his pilot after the death of Floyd Bennett, made their successful, first-ever flight over the South Pole on November 29, 1928, six months after signing this photograph. Lightly creased, touching 2 words of inscription. 2, ½-inch separations at blank edges (all paper intact), tip of upper right blank corner missing. Mounting remnant on verso (no show through), lightly soiled at blank margins.
