RICHARD E. BYRD. Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Lily Strange/with best wishes/RE Byrd". Sepia, 9¼x7¾. New York City, 1927. Photograph by Herbert Photos, Inc. Studios, New York (imprint on verso). Admiral Byrd is pictured at the Eternal Light Memorial in New York City's Madison Square Park. The light was first lit on Armistice Day, November 11, 1923, to commemorate the return of U.S. troops from WWI. Architect Thomas Hastings, of the noted architectural team of Carrère and Hastings, designed the Memorial. The eternal light still illuminates the New York night sky. This photograph was likely taken circa July 1927 as Byrd was honored with a ticker tape parade in New York City on July 18, 1927 in recognition of his leading the team that made the third airplane trip across the Atlantic Ocean since Charles Lindbergh's historic flight in May of that year. Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957), who had previously been honored with a ticker tape parade down Broadway on June 23, 1926 (after his flight across the North Pole, which would also result in him being awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor and a promotion to Commander) would be honored again on June 18, 1930, upon his return home from his first Antarctic expedition. He is the only person thrice so honored by the city. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on) touch 2 words of writing. ¼-inch tear at lower edge nicks the "E". Lower corners chipped away. Pencil notes verso, lightly soiled.
