RICHARD E. BYRD. Historic Photograph inscribed and signed: "To Harold Alcorn/with best wishes/R.E. Byrd". Sepia, 8x10. From caption on verso: "This picture was taken prior to the flight over the South Pole November 29, 1929. The Admiral is holding the flag which was dropped at the Pole. The flag is weighted with a stone from the grave of Floyd Bennett." On May 9, 1926, Richard E. Byrd and Floyd Bennett were the first to fly over the North Pole. Each was awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Bennett, who was appointed second in command of Byrd's 1928-1930 expedition to the South Pole, planned most of its details. Before the expedition set out, Bennett and pilot Bernt Balchen tried to salvage the Bremen, the first aircraft to cross the Atlantic westward, which had gone down off the Labrador coast. On the way, the 37-year-old Bennett fell ill and died in Quebec on April 25, 1928. When Byrd flew over the South Pole on November 29, 1929, in a plane piloted by Balchen, he dropped the U.S. flag weighted by a stone from Bennett's grave. Lightly rippled. Fine condition.
