RICHARD E. BYRD
Byrd signed this $400 check to Fitzhugh Green in 1928, the year he began his first expedition to Antarctica. Green, an explorer in his own right, wrote an account of Byrd's flying over the North and South Poles
Check signed "R E Byrd". 6¼x2¾, with perforated left edge. April 5, 1928. Check no. 21 for $400, payable to Fitzhugh Green and drawn on Byrd's account at Liberty National Bank in New York City. FITZHUGH GREEN ghostwrote books for Charles Lindbergh and Richard E. Byrd and wrote an account under his own name of Byrd's flying over the North and South Poles called Dick Byrd, Air Explorer. He also accompanied Donald B. MacMillan as a United States Navy Ensign in his search for Crocker Land off Cape Thomas Hubbard in Nunavut, Canada. RICHARD E. BYRD (1888-1957, born in Winchester, Virginia) made the first of his four expeditions to Antarctica between 1928 and 1930, during which time he established the "Little America" base and became the first man to fly over both the North and South Poles. Subsequent expeditions were made between 1933 and 1935 and between 1939 and 1941. Byrd detailed his adventures in books and on the lecture circuit following his returns to the U.S. Proceeds from his books and talks were used to finance additional expeditions, which continued through 1956. Byrd, who discovered Marie Byrd Land and the Edsel Ford Mountains, was given the honorary title, "Mayor of Antarctica". Lightly toned and creased. Normal bank stamps and cancellation holes, which touch handwriting but not signature. Folded thrice and unfolded. Otherwise in fine condition.
