Drawn on his personal account at the Farmers & Merchants National Bank, payable to Marie A. Byrd for $8,000. Endorsed on verso: "For deposit only/Marie A. Byrd". Richard E. Byrd flew over the North Pole in 1926 and the South Pole in 1929. He was awarded the Medal of Honor after his 1926 flight. Byrd established the Little America Antarctic base in 1929. He returned to Antarctica in 1933-1935, 1939-1940 and 1955-1957. Marie Byrd Land in Antarctica is named after the explorer's wife, recipient of this check. Bank date stamp crosses "R E B" of signature. Lightly soiled. Bank stamps on verso show through faintly.
