Sale Price $315.00
RICHARD E. BYRD. Photograph signed: "RE Byrd". B/w, 6½x8½. Depicts Byrd's three children: Katherine, aged two; Richard E. Byrd, III; and Evelyn, age 3. At the time of this photograph, Byrd was a Lieutenant Commander. Dated 5/11/26 in pencil on verso. This photograph was taken in Boston just two days after polar explorer Richard E. Byrd (1888-1957) became the first man to fly over the North Pole. Byrd and Floyd Bennett had set off from Spitzbergen in a Fokker tri-motor plane named Josephine Ford on their historic flight. Byrd was promoted to Commander for the feat, and he and Bennett were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Three years later, Byrd would become the first man to fly over both poles when he flew over the South Pole during his first (1928-1930) Antarctic expedition. Byrd, who was promoted to Admiral upon his return, would make trips to the Antarctic until 1956 - thirty years after his historic flight over the North Pole. Lightly creased and rippled. Minor surface creases (most not evident head on). Identifying pencil notes (unknown hand) on verso (no show through). International Newsreel stamp on verso, which is lightly soiled, tape remnants at lower margin. Overall, fine condition.
