REAR ADMIRAL RICHARD E. BYRD - AUTOGRAPHED SIGNED PHOTOGRAPH - HFSID 144226
Price: $850.00
RICHARD E. BYRD
Large Photograph signed: "Best wishes/R.E. Byrd." Sepia, 10x13 overall, 9x12
image (one surface). Byrd, who entered the United States Naval Academy at the
age of 20, learned to fly during World War I. Flying early seaplanes without
the benefit of visual landmarks led him to experiment with a number of
navigational aids. As a result of his success, Byrd was called upon to plan the
1919 transatlantic flights of the U.S. Navy Flying Boats NC1, NC3
and NC4. In 1926, Byrd and Floyd Bennett made their historic
flight over the North Pole, resulting in Byrd's promotion to
Commander and an outpouring of public support for his expeditions to
Antarctica. He was promoted to Rear Admiral shortly after his first flight
over the South Pole. Lightly worn edges, else fine
condition.
