Book inscribed and signed: "To Otto O Gerber/with cordial regards/R E Byrd" beneath reprinted sketch of him facing title page and "R E Byrd" on page headed "Author's Autograph Edition", 380p, 6½x10, hardcover. His book, Little America, G.P. Putnam's Sons: 1930. Numbered "859" of 1,000. "G.P. Putnams Sons" written (unknown hand) above Byrd's signature on special autograph page. Features 74 illustrations and maps. Richard E. Byrd, who had made an historic flight over the North Pole on May 9, 1926, had established the "Little America" Antarctic base during his first Antarctic expedition in 1929. He and three others crossed the South Pole during a 1,600-mile airplane flight on November 28-29, 1929. Byrd detailed his adventures in this book and on the lecture circuit following his return to the U.S. Proceeds from the book and talks were used to finance additional expeditions, which continued through 1956. Cover lightly soiled and worn. Internally sound. Fine condition.
