Menu. Dated: "June 6, 1939" (unknown hand) at upper left margin. On
July 7, 1939, just a month after signing this menu, polar explorer Richard E.
Byrd (1888-1957) announced plans for the U.S. Antarctic Service, his third
expedition to Antarctica. The expedition, with Byrd as Commander, left for
Antarctica in November 1939. Byrd, who had become the first man to fly over
both poles when he flew over the South Pole in November 1929 during his
first expedition (1928-1930), would continue to make trips to the southern polar
regions until 1956, thirty years after he made his historic flight over the
North Pole (May 9, 1926) with Floyd Bennett. Tape stains at corners. Lightly
soiled. Irregular left edge. Overall, fine condition.
