Flew over both the North and South Poles.
Original pen and ink drawing of Byrd signed: "R.E. Byrd/Boston Mass/July
9, 1928" and by the artist,"Griffith/1927". 10x14,
mounted to heavy board of the same size. In 1929, the year after he signed
this drawing, Byrd established the "Little America" Antarctica base and flew
over the South Pole. Byrd had been in charge of the aviation unit of the
Navy-McMillan Polar Expedition (1924-1925). With Floyd Bennett, he
flew over the North Pole and back to Kings Bay, Spitzbergen (1926).
Both men were awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor for their
achievement. On his Antarctic expeditions in the 1930s, Rear Admiral Byrd
discovered Marie Byrd Land and the Edsel Ford Mountains. Bottom right blank
corner torn away, worn at edges. Lightly soiled. Overall, fine
condition.
