RICHARD E. BYRD
Byrd signed this typed letter to Rufus J. Wrenn of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania in 1928, the year he began his first expedition to Antarctica, thanking him for calling attention to an error in one of his books.
Typed letter signed "R E Byrd". 1 page, 8 ¼ x 10 ¾, on letterhead of the Byrd Antarctic Expedition in Boston, Massachusetts. June 25, 1928. Addressed to Mr. Rufus J. Wrenn, Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. In full: "My dear Mr. Wrenn: Thank you for calling my attention to the error in my book in regard to Kitty Hawk, N. C. instead of S.C. Of course North Carolina should have the credit. I shall call this to the attention of my publishers. I appreciate the comment you made about my book. Sincerely yours,". Byrd (1888-1957, born in Winchester, Virginia) made the first of his four expeditions to Antarctica between 1928 and 1930, during which time he established the "Little America" base and became the first man to fly over both the North and South Poles. Subsequent expeditions were made between 1933 and 1935 and between 1939 and 1941. Byrd detailed his adventures in books and on the lecture circuit following his returns to the U.S. Proceeds from his books and talks were used to finance additional expeditions, which continued through 1956. Byrd, who discovered Marie Byrd Land and the Edsel Ford Mountains, was given the honorary title, "Mayor of Antarctica". Lightly toned and creased. Folded once vertically and twice horizontally. Discolored along folds on verso (no show-through). Otherwise in fine condition.
