RICHARD E. BYRD
He signs a typed letter to Leon Gutterman, thanking him for an
advance copy of his then new magazine Wisdom: The Magazine of Knowledge and
Education, saying that his objectives with the magazine are the attributes
of "good people"
Typed letter signed: "Richard E Byrd", in black ink, 1 page,
7¾x10½. United States Antarctic Expedition letterhead. Boston, Massachusetts.
July 25, 1955. In full: "Dear Mr. Gutterman:- I thank you very much
indeed for sending me an advance copy of WISDOM. It seems to me that at the
expenditure of a great deal of effort you have made for yourself and your
associates an opportunity to lessen the disharmony that is plaguing individuals
and nations in the world. I feel sure that you would like this to be at least
one of your objectives; and I congratulate you and wish you success. And effort
to dissipate disharmony now and for the future it seems to me is due to a divine
urge and is naturally the attribute of what we call "good people"! I am sure
that WISDOM is going to do a lot of good. I shall read all of it carefully. Wish
best wishes, Sincerely". On May 9, 1926, Richard Evelyn Byrd (1888-1957)
and Floyd Bennett became the first to fly over the North Pole. Both were
awarded the Congressional Medal of Honor. Scholars have raised questions
about whether or not Byrd actually reached the North Pole but all have agreed
Byrd thought he had reached the North Pole. In 1929, Byrd
established the "Little America" Antarctica base and flew (indisputably) over
the South Pole. He was promoted to Rear Admiral upon his return in 1930. On
his Antarctic expeditions in the 1930s, Byrd discovered Marie Byrd Land and the
Edsel Ford Mountains. Still exploring in his late 60s, he commanded the
Operation High Jump (1946-1947) and Operation Deep Freeze
(1955-1956) operations. Normal mailing folds. Stain on left margin. Corners
lightly worn. Fine condition.
