RICHARD E. BYRD. TLS: "Richard E. Byrd", 1p, 7¼x10½. Boston, Mass., 1953 October 11. To Ken Murray, Hollywood, California. In part: "I travel around a great deal. My three principal cities are New York, Boston, and Washington...I am now on my way to Washington tonight as chairman of the International Dinner of the 50th Anniversary of Powered Flight. If I don't leave for the South Pole soon, I will try to give you an interview...." BYRD embarked on an expedition to the South Pole shortly after writing this letter. The Wright Brothers had made the first powered flight in 1903, and it was fitting that Byrd, who made aviation history himself, chaired the dinner to commemorate the 50th anniversary of that flight. With Floyd Bennett, Byrd was the first to fly over the North Pole (1926). Byrd established the Antarctic base "Little America" and flew over the South Pole in 1929. He returned to Antarctica and the South Pole in 1933-1935, 1939-1940 and 1955-1956. KEN MURRAY was a vaudevillian, actor, radio and television entertainer. Creased. Type transfer just below closing, not affecting signature. Fine condition.
