Richard E. Byrd sends a typed letter asking for an opinion on a news item coming up.
Typed Letter Signed: "Dick", 1p, 8½x11. Boston, Massachusetts, 1931 December 26. To Mr. James E. Pond, New York, New York. Begins: "Dear Bim". In full: "Here is a news item on the coming D. A. R. meet, in Washington, on February 2. It might be advisable to get in touch with the President-General. What do you think of it? Looks good at this distance, if they have not gone too far with their plans. Hastily," Handwritten postscript: "maybe this is what you'd talked for last year." At the time of this letter, polar explorer RICHARD E. BYRD had already become the first man to fly over both the North Pole (1926) and the South Pole (1930). From 1928-1930, Byrd made the first of his four expeditions to Antarctica, establishing the "Little America" base as well as flying across the pole. Upon his return in 1930, Byrd had been promoted to Rear Admiral in the U.S. Navy. It is likely that he wanted to lecture to raise support for his future expeditions. JAMES B. POND, who had become the nation's premier lecture agent, had established his agency in New York in 1879. In addition to Byrd, his notable clients included Mark Twain, P.T. Barnum, Thomas Nast, James Whitcomb Riley, Henry Stanley and Booker T. Washington. Lightly creased. Folds, light horizontal fold underlines last line of postscript.
