RICHARD E. BYRD
Undated typed letter to a Miss Genn, signed by Byrd
Typed letter signed "RE Byrd". 1 page, 8¼x6¼. In full: "My dear Miss. Genn: I am sorry you have been kept waiting for a reply to your letter. I am just in Boston for the day and hasten to reply. I regret it will be impossible for me to write you anything for your Success Recipe, it is out of the question because I am leaving for the West Coast this week-end and shall not be back for two months. I hate to have to disappoint you but I am not my own master these days - and so true is this that I don't even get any time with my own family. All the time, too, correspondence continues to stream in beyond all ability to cope with it. I don't believe, however, that you are missing much in failing to obtain a contribution from me. I want to take this chance to wish you a very happy New Year. Cordially yours: REB/HHC". Byrd (1888-1957, born in Winchester, Virginia) made the first of his four expeditions to Antarctica between 1928 and 1930, during which time he established the "Little America" base and became the first man to fly over both the North and South Poles. Subsequent expeditions were made between 1933 and 1935 and between 1939 and 1941. Byrd detailed his adventures in books and on the lecture circuit following his returns to the U.S. Proceeds from his books and talks were used to finance additional expeditions, which continued through 1956. Byrd, who discovered Marie Byrd Land and the Edsel Ford Mountains, was given the honorary title, "Mayor of Antarctica". Lightly toned and creased. Irregular top edge. Lightly nicked at top edge. Lightly torn at lower right corner. Folded and twice and unfolded. Lightly nicked at folds on right edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
