Photograph signed on verso: "Samuel Eliot Morison". Color, 3½x5 Samuel Eliot Morison (1887-1976) was a professor of history at Harvard University and the author of many celebrated books on naval history. During World War II, Morison was the official US Navy Historian, rising to the rank of Reserve Rear Admiral. His 15-volume history of that conflict was published in a 1-volume abridgement, The Two Ocean War (1963). Morrison earned two Pulitzer Prizes for his biographies of Christopher Columbus (Admiral of the Ocean Sea, 1943) and John Paul Jones (1960). He also received two Bancroft Prizes for works of history: for The Rising Sun in the Pacific (1949), and for The European Discovery of America: the Northern Voyages (1972). He was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom in 1964. Lower right corner creased. Lightly soiled on verso. Otherwise, fine condition.
