The Rear Admiral signs a receipt for a check of $287.47
Receipt signed: "Sam L. Breeses", in black ink, 8¼x2¾. May 28,
1859. United States Navy Yard, New York. Receipt for a check from the Purser
United States Navy for two hundred eighty seven dollars and forty seven cents.
Samuel L. Breeses (1794-1870) served in the United States Navy in the
early 1800's, being appointed midshipman in 1810. In 1812, he served
at the Battle of Lake Champlain, receiving a gallant conduct and an honorary
sword with thanks from the US Congress. In 1856, he commanded the
Mediterranean Squadron, and after served as commandant of the Brooklyn Navy
Yard. He was commissioned as a Lieutenant in 1816, a Captain in 1841,
and retired a Rear Admiral in 1862. Corners slightly worn. Light surface
creases. Bottom and left edge frayed. Fine condition.
