Silas H. Stringham signs an autograph endorsement about three ships that needed adjustments.
Autograph Endorsement signed at upper left: "Forwarded by/S.H. Stringham/Comdt" of Autograph Letter Signed: "H.A. Goldsborough", 1p, 7¾x9½. Bureau of Navigation, Navy Department, Washington, 1864 August 27. To Lieut. Comdr. John G. Walther, U.S.N., Brig U.S.S. "Saco", Navy Yard, Boston. In part: "Mr. Frye wrote the Bureau that he had been informed the 'Rhode Island' 'Saco' & 'Massasoit' wolf be ready for his services - adjusting compasses - in 'about two weeks'; and on the 20th inst. Mr. F. was ordered to proceed to Boston 'in proper time' to adjust the compasses of the above named vessels...." Noted at bottom that it was sent to: "Rr: Adml S.H. Stringham". SILAS H. STRINGHAM entered the Navy in 1810 as midshipman on the frigate President, under Commodore John Rogers. In 1812 he was assigned to the Guererre, under Commodore Stephen Decatur. He later served in the Mexican War and the Civil War. In 1862, Stringham was made a Rear Admiral, on the retired list, and soon after this he became President of the Naval Commission. H.A. GOLDSBOROUGH was Chief Clerk for the Chief of the Bureau of Navigation. Folds, not at signature. Fine condition.
