President of the Court, 1p, 7½x9¾. Also signed twice: "H H
Goodman", Judge Advocate. Brooklyn Navy Yard, New York, 1868 February 4.
Summons to Midshipman M. S. Day to attend the Naval General Court Martial of
navy surgeon H. L. Babcock. Goodman's second signature discharges Day from
further attendance. Silas STRINGHAM (1798-1876) served the US Navy in three
major wars and other naval engagements. During the War of 1812, he saw
action against British warships aboard the frigate President. He
participated in campaigns against Algerian corsairs, and in the capture of a
slave ship. During the Mexican War, he commanded the Ohio during the
assault on Veracruz. As a US Rear Admiral during the Civil War, he commanded
the North Atlantic Blockade Squadron. During the Civil War, H. H. GOODMAN
was appointed Special Commissioner to investigate charges of fraud against
private contractors and navy personnel. Mounting stains along ½-inch strip
on left edge, which also has minor nicks. Otherwise, fine
condition.
