ALS: "Theodorus Bailey/Actg. Rear Admiral/U.S.N.," 1p, 5x75/8. No place, 1862 November 24. To George W. Reed, Esq. In full: "Your note is in hand. I take pleasure in complying with Your request." Bailey entered the Navy as a midshipman three months before his 13th birthday in 1818. His first cruise was on the sloop of war Cyane, suppressing slave trade off the coast of Africa (1820-1821). He circled the globe aboard the Vincennes, the Constellation and in the Mexican War, he took an active part on the Pacific coast. In 1861, Captain Bailey took command of the steam frigate Colorado, West Gulf Blockading Squadron, outside Pensacola. He was put second in command to Flag-Officer David G. Farragut in the attack on New Orleans in April 1862. Farragut sent Bailey to enter the city, receive the surrender and raise the U.S. flag. He was promoted to Commodore after the capture and in November, about the time he wrote this letter, he took command of the East Gulf Blockading Squadron. In the 18 months he held that post, he captured 150 blockade runners. He was promoted to Rear Admiral in 1866. File holes at left blank margin. Lightly soiled, chipped at right edge, else fine.
