REAR ADMIRAL WILLIAM HEMSLEY EMORY - AUTOGRAPH SENTIMENT SIGNED - HFSID 225855

ADMIRAL WILLIAM HEMSLEY EMORY
Autograph Sentiment signed as a squadron commander on the White Fleet
Autograph Sentiment signed: "With pleasure/Wm. Hemsley Emory/Commd'g Second Squadron/United States Atlantic Fleet/Flagship 'Louisiana'", 3x2 card. William Hemsley Emory (1846-1917) a US Naval Academy graduate (1866), commanded the cutter Bear on the expedition to relieve Greely's Arctic expedition (1884). He was naval attaché in London (1889). He commanded the cruiser USS Yosemite in the Atlantic Squadron during the Spanish-American War, with two future Navy Secretaries (Edwin Denby and Truman H. Newberry) as members of his crew. Promoted to captain in 1901, he commanded the battleship Indiana. From his flagship the Louisiana, Emory - now a Rear Admiral - commanded the four battleships of the Second Squadron of the Atlantic Fleet, commonly known as the Great White Fleet. This armada was sent around the world (1907-1909) by President Theodore Roosevelt as a symbol of America's rise to world power. Reaching compulsory retirement age in 1908, Emory was obliged to return home from Hong Kong, before the Fleet had completed the final leg of its journey. Surprisingly, Admiral William Hemsley Emory was not related to Union Civil War General William Hemsley Emory (1811-1887). Pencil note on verso (no show-through). Fine condition.
